Wine Grows and Beer Slows

The volume of liquor sold in Alberta this past fiscal year was down significantly due to the economic situation in the province. Beer was the hardest hit category due to a lot of 18-30 year-olds migrating out of the province in search of work. On the other hand, wine volume increased and even higher-end wines increased in sales.

The following statistics are from Apr 1, 2015 – Mar 31, 2016 showing the change from the previous fiscal year.

Volume of liquor sold – 3.78 million hL (.02 million hL decrease)

Liquor Revenue to government – $872 million ($106 million increase)

Wine/Mead Sales

Total Wine/Mead Sold – 453,192 hL (17,115 hL increase)

Alberta has 14,281 wine products from 43 countries.

Total Spirits Sold – 278,574 hL (2,755 hL decrease)

Beer Sales

Total Beer Sold – 2,756,429 hL (60,856 hL decrease)

Alberta has 3,686 beer products from 49 countries.
